☕ Coffee with Grim
Life has a funny way of teaching us lessons… if we’re paying attention.
The other night, I finally had a chance to sit down with a book I hadn’t touched in weeks. Life has been busy, and reading has taken a back seat.
I opened it where I thought I’d left off and started reading.
A few pages in, everything felt strangely familiar.
Then it hit me.
I’d already read this chapter… probably ten times.
Somewhere along the way, I’d lost my place, and instead of moving forward, I kept returning to the same pages.
That reminded me of something my oldest daughter said years ago. She’s always loved to read and most of the time, can finish a book in a single day. One day, with a smile, she said,
“Dad, you can’t start the next chapter if you keep reading the last.”
I’ve never forgotten those words.
Of course, she was talking about books.
However, life works the same way.
How many of us keep rereading old mistakes, old regrets, old conversations, or old pain? We know every word because we’ve lived that chapter over and over again.
Sometimes we stay there because it’s familiar. We know every page by heart. Even when those pages hurt, they’re easier to revisit than turning to a blank page where we don’t know what comes next.
Meanwhile, the next chapter is waiting to be opened.
The past can teach us. It can shape us. But it was never meant to become the place we live.
If we’re always looking backward, we’ll miss what’s unfolding right in front of us.
Maybe that’s one of life’s greatest prisons; not that we’re trapped by our past, but that we keep choosing to reread it.
Close the chapter.
Turn the page.
Your next chapter is waiting.
So, before I finish this cup of coffee, let me leave you with one question…
What chapter have you been rereading instead of moving on?
Until next time… keep paying attention.
