They Didn’t Catch a Break

Coffee with Grim

Life has a funny way of teaching us lessons… if we’re paying attention.

The other morning, I was standing in line at Starbucks, waiting for my usual hot chocolate, when I overheard two young twenty-somethings talking about someone who had become successful.

One of them shook his head and said, “They always seem to catch all the breaks.”

I smiled, apologized for interrupting, and said, “Can I offer you a different perspective?”

Then I told them something I’ve come to believe.

Most successful people didn’t catch a break. They caught a struggle.

What we’re usually seeing is the last chapter of someone’s story. What we don’t see are the setbacks, the failures, the sleepless nights, the disappointments, and the moments they questioned whether they should keep going.

Behind almost every success is a story that few people ever hear.

Pain has a way of teaching lessons that comfort never can. It shapes our character, exposes our weaknesses, and reminds us that growth rarely happens when life is easy.

The people who succeed aren’t always the smartest, the strongest, or the most talented. More often than not, they’re simply the ones who refused to stay down after life knocked them off their feet.

Here’s the beautiful part.

Every time you begin again, you’re not starting from scratch.

You’re starting from experience.

Every mistake has taught you something. Every setback has made you stronger. Every failure has given you wisdom you didn’t have before.

So don’t envy someone else’s success.

Respect the struggle that probably built it.

And if life has knocked you down lately, don’t mistake this chapter for the end of your story.

Stand back up.

Take what you’ve learned.

Start again.

Because you’re not beginning from nothing.

You’re beginning from experience.

So, before I finish this cup of coffee, let me leave you with one question.

What struggle in your life might actually be preparing you for the next chapter of your story?

Until next time… keep paying attention.
