Deep Roots

Coffee with Grim

Life has a funny way of teaching us lessons… if we’re paying attention.

I was helping a lady where I work clean up her garden after a series of storms rolled through. Branches were scattered across the yard, leaves covered everything, and several of her plants had been blown completely out of the ground.

As we worked, I noticed something. Not every plant had been damaged. In fact, an entire section of the garden looked as though the storm had never touched it.

I smiled and said, “Well… those plants made it.”

Without even looking up, she replied, “Their roots run deep.”

Then she just kept working.

I don’t think she realized how much those four words stayed with me.

Their roots run deep.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that storms don’t decide what survives. Roots do.

Life brings storms to every one of us. Loss. Disappointment. Trauma. Failure. Grief. None of us gets a free pass. The difference isn’t whether the storm comes—it’s what we’ve been growing long before the storm ever arrived.

Every day we make small deposits into our lives. The habits we build, the people we surround ourselves with, the values we choose to live by, and the time we spend caring for our mind, body, and spirit—those are our roots.

The truth is, roots aren’t built during the storm. They’re built on ordinary days, quietly and consistently, so they’ll hold when the extraordinary days arrive.

As we continued working, the weeds caught my attention too. Pulling a weed doesn’t always remove the root. Sometimes it grows right back. Maybe some of our old ways of thinking are like that. Fear. Shame. Anger. Self-doubt. They rarely disappear overnight. They require patience, attention, and a willingness to keep tending the garden.

So, here’s something to think about over your next cup of coffee:

What are you doing today to deepen your roots before the next storm arrives?

Until next time… keep paying attention.
