Reconnect with Joy

Journal Reflection:

  1. What activities or moments bring you joy?
  2. How can you incorporate more joy into your daily life?
  3. How does joy help you face challenges?

Grim’s Journal Entry:

Activity:

I spent a few hours fishing, sitting quietly by the water, feeling the rhythm of casting and waiting, and watching the world around me.

My journal reflection:

  1. What activities or moments bring you joy?

Joy shows up for me in simple, meaningful moments. Fishing slows everything down and reminds me to breathe. Time with my family grounds me and brings me back to who I am beyond titles and responsibilities. Quiet reflection outside gives me space to listen instead of react, while journaling helps me make sense of what’s going on beneath the surface. Connecting with fellow veterans and first responders brings a level of understanding that doesn’t require explanation — a shared language built on service, sacrifice, and resilience. In those moments, I feel present, connected, and genuinely alive.

  1. How can you incorporate more joy into your daily life?

I can incorporate more joy by being intentional instead of waiting for the “right time.” That means scheduling small, protected pockets of time for these activities and treating them as essential parts of my well-being, not luxuries. A few quiet minutes outside, a short fishing trip, or uninterrupted one-on-one time with my kids can shift my entire day. When I plan for joy the same way I plan for responsibility, I stop seeing it as optional and start honoring it as fuel.

  1. How does joy help you face challenges?

Joy restores perspective when life feels heavy. It reminds me of what matters and why I keep moving forward, even when things are hard. Joy strengthens resilience by calming my mind, steadying my emotions, and giving me something solid to stand on when challenges arise. It doesn’t erase difficulties, but it gives me the clarity and hope needed to face them without losing myself in the process.
