Grim’s Journal Entry:
Strength 1: Courage
- I recently used courage in seeking help for mental health struggles. While I knew I was experiencing symptoms of PTSD, such as anxiety and flashbacks, I was extremely hesitant to do anything about it. I refused to reach out for professional support due to the stigma surrounding mental health and the feeling of being weak. Despite fears of being judged or misunderstood, it took courage for me to contact the Veterans Administration, meet with a therapist, and attend a support group. By doing so, I began to address my challenges and work towa
rd healing.
Strength 2: Empathy
- My strength of empathy is one I currently use to overcome my mental loneliness, which involves feeling disconnected or misunderstood despite being around others. All too often, I feel mentally isolated, struggling with thoughts and emotions that I believe no one around me can relate to. Rather than internalizing these feelings of isolation, I practice empathy toward myself, acknowledging the mental and emotional challenges I am experiencing without judgment. Additionally, I find it a bit easier to reach out to others, offering empathy and listening without expecting immediate solutions, which can open up genuine, meaningful conversations and create stronger connections.
Strength 3: Positivity
- Positivity is a strength I use to overcome the daily challenge of dealing with a health setback.
After being diagnosed with a chronic physical ailment, I struggle with daily symptoms that interfere with
my usual activities, leading to frustration and a sense of defeat. Instead of focusing on the limitations, I
use a positive mindset by celebrating small victories, such as managing symptoms better on certain days
or making progress with treatment. I try to stay optimistic about the future, focusing on what I can control,
and maintain hope that each day brings new opportunities for healing and growth.
Positivity, empathy, and courage have helped me overcome challenges by maintaining confidence in difficult times, understanding and supporting others, and bravely stepping out of my comfort zone to face uncertainty and grow.
As for which of the three strengths I rely on the most, it is empathy. Empathy allows me to foster meaningful connections, improves communication, and enhances understanding. In everyday situations, empathy will enable me to navigate relationships more effectively, whether with family, friends, coworkers, or strangers. It helps me understand others’ perspectives, resolve conflicts, and offer support when needed. Additionally, empathy can improve my emotional strength, as it often leads to greater compassion for myself and others, helping me handle daily struggles with more patience and insight.
To face daily struggles, I can tap into my strengths by trusting my ability to adapt and problem-solve. I also draw on my inner resources to keep moving forward, even when things seem overwhelming. By leaning into my strengths, I can build confidence in my ability to navigate challenges and create a sense of control in uncertain times.
